Whole Body Cryotherapy, or WBC, is the practice of using cold temperatures to promote natural healing and wellness which dates back to ancient civilizations. WBC as we know it today was developed in 1978 by Dr. Toshima Yamauchi to treat rheumatoid arthritis. WBC uses a temperature range of -90 Celsius (-130ºF) to -120 Celsius (-184ºF) to hyper cool the body for 2 to 3-minutes — similar to how athletes use ice baths, or how you would ice a sprained ankle. There are various modern applications of cryotherapy including cryo facials, localized cryotherapy, and whole body cryotherapy, which is currently  the most popular form of cryo.

WHAT DOES A CRYO SESSION ENTAIL?

During the cryo session, you’re exposed to ultra-low temperatures from the shoulders down. Your skin’s surface temperature is lowered by 30-50 degrees and activates the body’s natural fight-or-flight response. The cold sensation stimulates the skin’s receptors to constrict the blood vessels and rush blood back to the body’s core, where it is oxygenated and enriched.

Upon exiting the cryosauna your blood vessels dilate, sending (at lightning speed) supercharged blood full of anti-inflammatory proteins, endorphins, and oxygen throughout your body. This process accelerates the rate of tissue repair and reduces inflammation while boosting the body’s metabolic rate resulting in a residual weight loss of 500-800 calories in the 5 hours post-session. Furthermore, the cold experienced in the Cryosauna affects only the skin temperature, 1/2 millimeter deep, and does not reduce the body’s internal temperature.

WHAT’S THE PROCESS, AND HOW CAN I FREEZE?

You’ll undress to your level of comfort and put on your cryo safe garb – a nice, fluffy robe, booties, thermal socks, and gloves.

Before the session, the tech will pre-cool the cryosauna. Once complete, they’ll help you enter the cryosauna, close the door, and let you to (modestly!) disrobe.

The Main Event:

As the session begins, you’ll feel the cold, dry, nitrogen vapor surrounding you. Your tech will be there the entire time. You’ll rotate, dance, wiggle… anything to keep your mind off the chill.

You may hear a beeping sound every 31 seconds – don’t be alarmed! The cryosauna is alerting your tech to click the “okay” button to keep the session going and is implemented to ensure your safety.
